How to become a Physiotherapist in India

No doubt physiotherapy is one of the best areas in the healthcare sector. Physiotherapists are working in almost every department in Health sector. The demand for this course has been increasing in the recent times. Students who are choosing physiotherapy as a career has been increasing due to the Changes in Lifestyle, Need of physiotherapy services in every health department, Incremental of awareness in people over sports and Fitness.

Presently Physiotherapy is playing a key role in the Health Sector. Physiotherapists do their job when a person's Hand or Leg is fractured Physiotherapists are important for 1) In the usage of Exercise Equipments according to the need while Training. 2) Electrotherapy 3)Magnotherapy 4) Fixing Damaged muscles 5) For Ligaments and Tendons issues. Sport Persons also need Physiotherapists as trainer in Fitness centers.

There are Vocational, Bachelor Degree, PG courses available in Andhra Pradesh regarding Physiotherapy. The qualification for Vocational course is 10th. However, If one wants to start a career as Physiotherapist he should possess Bachelor Degree. This course is called as BPT(Bachelor of Physiotherapy). Thereafter different Specializations are available in MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) in PG level.

BPT(Bachelor of Physiotherapy): The qualification needed to join in BPT(Bachelor of Physiotherapy) is Intermediate(Bi.P.C) or Intermediate Vocational(Physiotherapy). Course duration is: 4 1/2 Years( With 6 Months Internship). Almost 180 Colleges are offering BPT course in india. In andhra pradesh 36 colleges offering this course. In that there is availabality of 1500 seats. There is no entrace test for admission.

Needed Skills: If one wants to success in this field few special qualities are important as Physiotherapy is a special field. He should explain the scientific reasons behind a problem and have to suggest a solution for that. He must have Physical ability to work for continuous hours. Must behave sympathetic and should show patience towards patients. Along with that they must fill courage and Self confidence in Patients. Ability of observation and the interest of learning new things are essential.

Opportunities: There is a need for physiotherapists in almost every health department. Presently physiotherapists are not available as per the demand in our country. According to one estimation one physiotherapist must be available for every 10,000 population. By taking this details in to concern we can tell that a person who completes this course will get a job in Private, Government sectors. They can perform duties as a Physiotherapists in fields like Hospitals, Orthopedic departments, Health Institutes, Defence, Health clubs, Community Health Centres, Nursing Homes, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centers, Sports Clinics.  Sports field is also a nice option for their career. They can be Physios or Trainers for sports persons. Demand has been increasing in the recent times as awareness is increasing in people and fitness centers and health centers are being established according to their needs. Another plus point is Software companies and MNC's are operating Fitness centers. They can start their own clinic. There is nice opportunities for them in foreign countries. The demand for Physiotherapists is mainly in US, Canada and Australia.


Salaries: According to the present situation Physiotherapists getting salary of about Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month. Normally freshers can earn up to 10,000 to 15000 in private sectors. They are getting attractive packages in Private sector too. In central government organizations like AIIMS they are paying Rs. 30,000 monthly as starting. Thereafter salary may vary as per the designation. For senior physiotherapist it will be Rs.45,000 monthly,  For Superintendent Cadre it will be Rs.60,000 t0 70,000 monthly. One can earn upto Rs.80,000 per month after reaching Chief superintendent level. If they choose teacher profession they can earn minimum Rs.10,000 at starting and After reaching seniority level they can earn Rs.40,000 per month. Lot of physiotherapists are opting for own practice. Normally they will charge Rs.250 to 400 for one sitting.


Foreign Countries: Physiotherapy has lot of demand in Foreign countries like USA and Canada. If one wants to start career as Physiotherapist in there they must have to pass in National Licensing Examination. In some countries one can register for doing practice if they have Bachelor degree. Mainly USA, Canada, UAE, Australia are best countries for job opportunities. Coming to the salary details they can get salaries ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs.2 Lakhs per month.

Higher Education: After BPT there is an option for doing MPT(Master of Physiotherapy) in PG Level. The entrace will be done by Counselling process. Concerned notification will be released in July/August/September. In A.P 17 Colleges are offering MPT Course in different specializations. If they have more interest they can do PHD as well.
